Steven Nguyen

graduate student (CCB)

Steven earned his B.S. in Biology at the University of Houston (UH) in May 2022. As an undergraduate, he investigated the role of novel long non-coding RNAs in the development of castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) under Dr. Qin Feng. After graduation, he joined Dr. Ping Yi’s lab as a technician (then BCM, now UH). In this role, he continued studying the mechanisms of CRPC development and eventually advanced to lab manager.

After matriculating into the Cancer & Cell Biology PhD program at BCM in 2023, he joined Dr. Fazal’s lab to work on some of the mysteries of RNA biology – specifically, he is using massively parallel reporter assays and APEX-seq to investigate the prevalence of sequence elements called β€œzipcodes” in the transcriptome which direct the localization of transcripts to different locations. His other research interests include metabolism, aging, and cancer.

Steven was born and raised in Houston, TX. Outside the lab, he loves playing the bass guitar, learning Japanese, and meeting new people.
